“And if I could address the Russian people, I would say to them: you deserve to live in security and dignity, like all people around the world, and no one – not Ukraine, not the United States, not NATO or its members – seeks put it in jeopardy. But what really threatens your security is a senseless war with your neighbors in Ukraine, with all the ensuing consequences, especially for young people who will risk or even give their lives for it,” Blinken said.
The Secretary of State said that Russia should not be allowed to violate the principles of international peace and security established after two world wars and the Cold War.
“To allow Russia to violate these principles with impunity would be to send us all back to much more dangerous and unstable times,” Blinken said.
He noted that it is for the sake of protecting these principles that the United States, allies and partners in Europe are so focused on what is happening in Ukraine.
“This is more than a conflict between two countries. This is more than Russia and NATO. This is a crisis with global implications and requires global attention and action,” the Secretary of State said.
