Fighting poaching in Kenya seems to be successful: more elephants and giraffes counted

The KWS has mapped a total of 30 different animal species on approximately 59 percent of Kenya’s territory. The number of rhinoceroses, lions, grévy’s zebras and hirola (Hunter’s hartebeest) have also increased in recent years.

A total of 1,739 rhinoceroses have been counted, including two northern white rhinoceroses, 897 endangered black rhinoceroses and 840 white rhinoceroses. Just under 40,000 wildebeest have been counted in the Masai Mara Natural Park.

The national census was carried out in May and took three months to complete. In addition, 63 humpback whales, two blue whales, 29 white sharks and 11 rays were counted off the Kenyan coast.
