Fighting Bullying in Medical Education: IDI Takes Firm Action

Jakarta

The phenomenon of bullying that has occurred in the world of medical education recently has become a hot topic of discussion. This bullying practice that occurs in the medical education environment has been going on for decades.

Many acknowledgments emerged from juniors who received unpleasant treatment from seniors. Starting from being forced to become a ‘senior personal assistant’ to having to spend a lot of money for the personal interests of seniors.

Regarding the many cases of bullying in the medical world, the Chairperson of PB IDI (Indonesian Doctors Association) Dr. Moh Adib Khumaidi, SpOT said that the practice of bullying that occurred was not a tradition.

“The problem of bullying is not a problem of tradition. If we talk about tradition, there is nothing in the doctor’s oath, there is nothing in the medical code of ethics that justifies bullying. And we need to emphasize this,” said Dr. Adib in a press conference, Saturday (22/7/2023).

Furthermore, Dr. Adib emphasized that his party would take firm action against the perpetrators of bullying who could cause mental, physical and material harm to juniors.

“If there are things related to bullying, what we act on is the elements,” he said.

“It is these individuals that we need to emphasize that there is no process for us to protect because if it is related to ethical violations, criminal issues, we will take firm action if there are elements who do it,” he continued again.

If you find or experience bullying problems, Dr. Adib said that IDI is ready to receive reports and will follow up on the case. Especially if the case really violates ethics and has the potential to be criminal.

“We will follow up strictly if there is information from our colleagues regarding bullying. I think it can really violate ethics and has the potential for general punishment because it is criminal,” he added.

Furthermore, Dr. Adib also ensures the safety of victims who want to report bullying cases to IDI.

“We will protect if there are victims who report so that they can continue their studies without threats happening to these victims if someone reports to us. This is our concern,” he concluded.
