From the new season, assistants in Italy will only be allowed to place the ball on the touchline, instead of handing it over or throwing it to the players as before. According to the new rule, players will have to take the ball for throw-ins themselves. The only exception are the goalkeepers, who will continue to receive the ball from the ball boy.
The English Premier League, which introduced a similar rule in March, serves as a model. “The aim is to prevent the home team from gaining a competitive advantage by giving instructions to the ball boys and girls and to prevent tension from arising in connection with the return of the ball,” it was said at the time.
