Another step was taken by the executive last Thursday in the fight against food insecurity in the country, with the signing of an agreement between the Malagasy government and the International Potato Center (CIP). This signing ceremony, which took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was marked by the presence of the head of diplomacy as well as the regional director for Africa of the International Potato Center.
This agreement paves the way for the establishment of a permanent CIP representative office in Madagascar, which will promote the implementation of CIP activities in the country. It marks a major step in promoting more nutritious and resilient potato varieties, a goal of the Malagasy government in the fight against food insecurity.
The International Potato Center is recognized for its expertise in developing potato varieties adapted to local conditions, and this cooperation will intensify efforts to strengthen food security, particularly in southern regions of the country, who are the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
The Emergence of the Great South plan, set up by the government, aims to improve the living conditions of the populations of southern Madagascar by strengthening agriculture and ensuring a stable food supply. The CIP, with its years of experience in promoting suitable potato varieties, will play a key role in achieving this objective.
During her speech, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yvette Sylla, underlined the importance of this cooperation for agricultural development and the improvement of nutrition in Madagascar. She also affirmed that this agreement marks a firm commitment by the government to combat food insecurity and strengthen the resilience of rural communities in the face of climate challenges.
