In view of the corona pandemic, the city of New York wants to provide 74,000 air conditioning systems to particularly vulnerable seniors. In the first weeks of the program, around 4,500 devices were installed, eight times as many as in the entire past year, said Mayor Bill de Blasio on Friday.
The air conditioning systems are designed to help risk groups stay at home. In the metropolis of New York, especially in July and August, the weather is often humid with temperatures above 40 degrees. The city is particularly badly affected by the corona pandemic.
Most of the machines are to be used in social housing projects. The associated agency NYCHA manages a total of around 170,000 apartments in the city, many of them to senior citizens. In addition, the city wants to subsidize the energy costs of around 440,000 families in the coming months with around 70 million dollars, promised de Blasio.
