The second option allows the Italian national team to replace Ecuador at the 2022 World Cup. Azzurri is the highest team in the current FIFA rankings that failed to qualify for the qualifying phase.
But all these rumors were vehemently denied by FIGC President Gabriele Gravina.
“The chance is zero,” he said, as reported by Football Italia.
“Europe has 13 places and all of them have been filled. If there is a vacant position in South America, yes it will fall into the hands of a South American country,”
“We have spoken to FIFA and the response has been very negative.”
