Athletes from the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, who will receive a neutral status, will be able to compete in tournaments under the auspices of the FIG from January 1, 2024.
Another sports organization, apparently, succumbed to pressure from the IOC and its head Thomas Bach, who continues to threaten the world with the “end of sport” due to the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes and periodically attacks Western governments who insist on the complete isolation of Russian and Belarusian sports from -for the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
We are talking about the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), which on Wednesday, July 19, announced its decision to allow representatives of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus to compete under its auspices, but on condition of neutrality. Relevant information is published on site organizations.
The report notes that in order to obtain the status of “individual neutral athlete” Russians and Belarusians must strictly follow the requirements of neutrality and submit the necessary application to the FIG. Those gymnasts and gymnasts who receive this status will be able to compete in tournaments under the auspices of the FIG from January 1, 2024. They will compete without indicating their belonging to the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, as well as to the federations and national Olympic committees of these countries.
Despite the fact that Ukraine demands the complete removal of Russian and Belarusian athletes from international sports and refuses to compete in tournaments to which representatives of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus are admitted, the FIG claims that with its today’s decision, the federation “confirmed its strong condemnation of Russia’s senseless invasion of Ukraine.”
In addition, the organization promises to continue to provide assistance to the victims of the war in Ukraine.
The previous time FIG considered the participation of Russians and Belarusians in international competitions in May this year. Then the federation rejected the recommendations of the IOC on the return of athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus.
Recall that last week the IOC accused the governments of some Western countries of unwillingness to return Russians and Belarusians to international sports and again threatened with the “end of sport” if the governments determine the composition of the participants in the competition.
Moreover, the IOC has deprived the UK of the opportunity to hold qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Olympics in “new” sports because of London’s tough stance towards Russian and Belarusian athletes.
