Fifty professional successes at 23 years and 7 months. To reach such a significant goal, Remco Evenepoel “chooses” the house specialty, the sidereal distance solo. The Belgian easily enters the day’s breakaway which marks the eighteenth stage of the Vuelta di Spagna 2023 and greets each company 29 kilometers from the finish line, flying alone towards the finish line in La Cruz de Linares. Third success in this edition after Arinsal and Larra-Belagua for the phenomenon of Soudal – Quick Step, which puts the polka dot shirt in the safe as the icing. Damiano Caruso is the first of the mortals, second at the finish line at almost five minutes. Third was the ever-present Andreas Kron. The big players let the attackers go and did not give up in the final, with the exception of two timid attacks by Mikel Landa. The top six in the general finish essentially together, even if Jonas Vingegaard concedes a few meters at the end after working for Sepp Kuss and slips 17 seconds behind his teammate in the standings. The American thus remains in the red jersey, the Jumbo-Visma offers no surprises. Between here and the glory of Madrid, the native of Durango still has two probable sprints to overcome and the insidious Walloon stage on Saturday.

The news
After Bejes and Angliru, the Vuelta di Spagna 2023 closes the triptych of uphill finishes that characterize this third week. A fraction seasoned with five GPM and over 4600 meters of altitude difference. The breakaway of the day materializes after a few kilometers and is triggered by Egan Bernal (INEOS Greandiers), Julien Bernard (Lidl Trek) and Lorenzo Germani (Groupama – FDJ). Also joining the trio were Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick Step), Damiano Caruso (Bahrain – Victorious), Lewis Askey (Groupama – FDJ), Nico Denz (BORA – hansgrohe), Jarrad Drizners, Andreas Kron (Lotto Dstny), Andrea Piccolo (EF Education-EasyPost), Imanol Erviti (Movistar), Max Poole (Team dsm – firmenich), Hugo Hofstetter (Arkea Samsic), Paul Ourselin (TotalEnergies) for a total of 14 men in advance. Jumbo-Visma takes matters into their own hands without overdoing it and the delay of the red jersey group exceeds even eleven minutes.
The first category climb is the Alto de las Estacas (2nd category of 5.1 km at 7.5%, peaking at 7.9%). Michael Storer and Romain Bardet would be Evenepoel’s main rivals in the fight for the polka dot jersey, but neither is present in the breakaway and the Belgian has no problem going over the top first. Downhill and flats do not change the score, there is excellent agreement in front and little interest in closing the gap behind. At -100 the tough Puerto de San Lorenzo begins (1st category of 9.9 km at 8.6%, peaking at 16%). Hugo Hofstetter and Lorenzo Germani move away from the lead, even the main group is skimmed. Evenepoel also puts this GPM in his pocket ahead of Caruso and arithmetically conquers the polka dot jersey ranking (no one can overtake him, all they need to do is get to Madrid).
Germani returns to the following rapid descent, which leads to the start of the Alto de Tenebredo (3rd category of 3.4 km at 9.5%, peaking at 12.1%). Here there is greater selection, thanks to Remco Evenepoel’s no-nonsense gait. With the Belgian, at the top of the climb, only Caruso, Poole, Kron, Ourselin and Bernal remain. Even Piccolo and Bernard don’t give up and manage to return downhill. The group continues placidly at almost twelve minutes. After a short hilly section, the pacesetters face the first passage on the Puerto de la Cruz de Linares (1st category of 8.3 km at 8.6%, peaking at 16%). Evenepoel begins the climb in the lead, but the first to accelerate is Andreas Kron. Only Remco, Caruso and Poole respond, but then the Lotto Dstny rider pays for the effort, breaking away. At -29, Evenepoel breaks the deadlock and raises the pace in his own way. Caruso gives in and shortly afterwards Poole also raises the white flag. Thus begins the Belgian’s final show.
The group also reaches the climb and Bahrain – Victorious takes the lead as on the Angliru, showing off a brilliant Antonio Tiberi again. Evenepoel crosses the finish line for the first time with 1’35” on Poole and 1’50” on Caruso. A difficult descent begins, where the Belgian doesn’t take any risks at all. Poole nibbles away a few seconds, but Caruso does even better, falling back onto the Team dsm rider. But when they face Puerto de la Cruz de Linares again, Evenepoel returns to grind and takes off. From the big group there is a sudden attack by Aleksandr Vlasov on the flat, but the Russian doesn’t make a gap. While in front Remco continues the climb without hesitation, behind him Bahrain returns to dictate the pace as soon as the climb starts again. Wout Poels’ pace is once again exhausting for many and only Landa, Buitrago, the three Jumbos, Ayuso, Mas, Vlasov and Uijdtebroeks resist.
Landa tries to reward his team’s work and tries to push forward, but without conviction. Ayuso first, then Kuss, Roglic, Vingegaard and Mas return to the Basque. The Bahraini rider tries again a little further on, but this time too it doesn’t make a difference. At that point Jonas Vingegaard takes the lead and it becomes clear that today the team is 100% with Sepp Kuss. Meanwhile, it’s party time for Remco Evenepoel, who puts his index finger to his temple to underline his mental strength and scores his 13th success of the season. Several minutes later, a happy Caruso and a recovering Kron arrive. Then it’s the big names’ turn. Landa and Vingegaard lose a few meters on Ayuso’s final acceleration, while Kuss sees the finish line – the most important one – ever closer.
