Fifty people arrested for riots in Utrecht so far | NOW

About fifty people have now been arrested for involvement in the riots in various Utrecht neighborhoods of last week, the law enforcement Friday. More arrests are not ruled out.

According to the police, people were mainly arrested during the riots for disturbing public order and ignoring an emergency order. Three people have also been arrested for incitement via social media.

“Perpetrators who threw stones and fireworks at the police and caused vandalism, however, do not escape their punishment,” said the police. The camera images and witness statements are still being analyzed for recognisability of the perpetrators and the criminal acts. More arrests are therefore not ruled out.

The past week was unsettled by riots in various Dutch cities. There have been riots in The Hague, Rotterdam and Amersfoort. In Utrecht it was restless in the neighborhoods Kanaleneiland, Overvecht and Zuilen. Emergency orders were issued for various parts of the neighborhoods.

The Utrecht mayor Peter den Oudsten did not have a good word for the riots. “The violence that has been used is absolutely not possible. We must therefore be tough on the perpetrators,” the mayor said on Monday. Radio M Utrecht.
