Fifth Night of Violence and Looting in France After Police Killing of Nahel, 17: Updates and Impact

France was the scene of a fifth night of violence and looting after the death of young Nahel, 17, shot dead by a police officer on Tuesday when he refused to comply. But this night of riots was on the whole less intense than the previous one.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, 719 people were arrested, against 994 on Saturday at the same time. At this stage, 45 police and gendarmes have been injured, 577 vehicles and 74 buildings have been set on fire and 871 fires have been recorded on public roads, the ministry added. Ten police stations, 10 gendarmerie barracks and 6 municipal police stations were also targeted.

The night was marked by the shock of the car-ram attack on the home of the mayor of L’Haÿ-les-Roses (Val-de-Marne). Around 1:30 a.m., while the mayor, Vincent Jeanbrun (LR), was in his Town Hall, rioters launched a ram car at his house before setting it on fire. His wife was hospitalized after being injured in the knee, as well as one of his two young children, who was more lightly, according to the entourage of the chosen one. An investigation was opened for attempted murder.
