“Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn Celebrates Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Consulate Events”

Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park, in Brooklyn, will be this May 5th a branch of the state of Puebla, in Mexico with the commemoration of the Battle of Puebla.

This area is characterized by having many Mexican businesses and restaurants, the majority of people from Puebla.

This area is so identified with Mexico that Fifth Avenue was added the name of Cinco de Mayo.

“Since I can remember and since I came to this country, May 5 is a very commemorative date. Most of the inhabitants of the area are merely from Puebla,” said Sonia Castillo.

This Friday marks one more anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, where the Mexican army defeated the French army.

This celebration is not the main national holiday in Mexico, but in the United States it has become the day to celebrate this country.

“It is a heroic feat that Mexico had at the time against the most powerful army in the world, the French army.

“Mexican-Americans have identified this date as something very symbolic that gives a sense of identity, pride and belonging,” explained the Mexican consul in New York, Jorge Islas.

For this reason, the Mexican Consulate in New York enlists a series of events and celebrations:

This doll made by the community of Santiago Mexquititlán travels around the world and arrives this week in New York. From May 4 to 7, it will be installed in Times Square.
