Fifteen thousand peasant families ravaged by drought in Bundas

Fifteen thousand peasant families are being severely affected by drought, in the municipality of Bundas, Moxico province, with the destruction of more than 40 thousand tons of various products, in the current agricultural campaign, ANGOP learned yesterday Wednesday.

According to the municipal director of Agriculture in that region, Canhica Laston, the drought has been ongoing since November last year, “severely” affecting many crops. “The drought caused the destruction of products already released on the land, and as a result, more than 15 thousand families have their production compromised,” he said.

To reverse the situation and minimize the effects of the drought, authorities in the municipality of Bundas are working on a training program for farmers on new cultivation techniques based on irrigation. Corn, cassava and potatoes are the most produced crops in that region, which is 356 kilometers from Luena, capital of the province of Moxico.

Bundas is one of the nine municipalities in the province of Moxico, which has 37 thousand 817 km². Lumbala Nguimbo is the municipal seat, also including the communes of Lutembo, Chiume, Luvuei, Ninda, Mussuma Mitete and Sessa.

The municipality is limited to the north by the municipalities of Moxico and Alto Zambeze, to the east by the Republic of Zambia, to the south by the municipalities of Rivungo and Mavinga (in the neighboring province of Cuando Cubango), and to the west by the municipality of Luchazes.
