About twenty men and young people who took part in an initiation ritual were beheaded in northern Mozambique on Monday by a group of armed men. Local sources announced this on Wednesday. The attack is attributed to jihadists.

The mutilated bodies of at least five adults and 15 teenagers were found scattered Monday in a forest in the Muidumbe district.
“The police were notified by local residents who found the bodies in the forest,” said an official from the neighboring Mueda district. “They were young people who had come to take part in an initiation ritual,” it says.
The Mozambican government has not yet officially confirmed reports of the violence.
Jihadist rebels have been active in Cabo Delgado province for three years and have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State terror group (ISIS). They have already attacked, looted and set fire to several villages in the region. In April, they had also beheaded some fifty young people who refused to join the jihadists.
