Argentina’s world champion captain Lionel Messi can hope for the next big award. The 36-year-old is one of the three finalists in the election for FIFA World Player of the Year, as the world association announced on Thursday. In addition to the Inter Miami playmaker, Kylian Mbappé (24) from Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (23) are also in the top three. The trio had already been nominated for the Ballon d’Or this year, but Messi won.

The winner will be announced at a FIFA gala in London on January 15th. A jury made up of captains and coaches from the national teams, journalists and fans were allowed to vote. Messi also received the 2022 award in February of this year, a good two months after winning the World Cup with Argentina. As a seven-time world footballer, he is already a record holder.
The women’s finalists are the Spanish world champions Aitana Bonmati (25) from FC Barcelona and Jennifer Hermoso (33) from CF Pachuca as well as the Colombian Linda Caicedo (18) von Real Madrid. The Spanish woman Alexia Putellas (29) was awarded for 2022, Bonmati received the Ballon d’Or this year.
