After Ballon d’Or: Another defeat for Benzema

ZURICH. No Ballon d’Or – and now no world footballer title either. Karim Benzema will not be rewarded with any significant individual award for his strong performance in 2021. After the star striker of Real Madrid had already landed on a disappointing fourth place in the Golden Ball election, he did not make it onto the podium in the “The Best” vote by the world football association FIFA.

The exact placements will not be revealed until the virtual FIFA gala on January 17th, but the three finalists were announced in advance on Friday afternoon – by the way, by ex-Real professional Sami Khedira.

Unlike Benzema, Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich), Lionel Messi (Paris Saint-Germain) and Mohamed Salah (Liverpool FC) can still hope for the big coup.

FIFA World Footballers – CR7 and Co .: Who is also out

On November 22nd last year, FIFA announced an eleven-person preselection. Just like the vice-captain of Los Blancos are also Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United), Kylian Mbappé, Neymar (both PSG), Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City), Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund), Jorginho and N’Golo Kanté (both Chelsea FC) out of the race. Apart from Benzema, no other professional was nominated by Real.

When choosing a FIFA World Player, the performances in the 2020/21 season including the Olympic Games, which ended in August, will be taken into account. The reigning world footballer is Lewandowski, the reigning world coach Jürgen Klopp from Liverpool FC. In this category, Pep Guardiola (ManCity), Roberto Mancini (Italy) and Thomas Tuchel (Chelsea) are in the final selection.
