United States and Wales shared the stakes for the World Cup debut in Qatar. Faced with much more enterprising Americans, the Welsh were content to defend themselves. They managed an equalizer from a Gareth Bale penalty in the 82nd minute.
The Americans were on their way to a narrow but deserved success when in the 80th minute defender Zimmerman violently bumped into Gareth Bale, who had been invisible up to that moment. The Welsh captain did not miss the opportunity to grab an almost unexpected point given the progress of the match by converting the penalty (82nd).
The American selection led from the 24th minute. An absolutely deserved lead given his superiority in the game Timothy Weah, son of George Weah, opened the scoring for the Americans. The Lille striker, trained at PSG, finished perfectly a millimeter opening from Christian Pulisic. Weah, marked from too far by Neco Williams, managed to take a decisive lead before cunningly beating goalkeeper Hennessey (36th).
Zimmerman offers the Welsh equalizer against his will
This opening was perfectly logical. Coach Gregg Berhalter’s Americans largely dominated the game with Pulisic in charge. The Americans, the forthcoming organizers of the World Cup, have often prevented the Welsh from leaving their area.
On the Welsh side, disappointment came first from Gareth Bale. The former Real Madrid striker has been transparent, being just a shadow of the player who propelled Wales to the semi-finals of Euro 2016. A very poor estimate from American defender Zimmerman allowed the Welsh captain to walk off the field with his head held high.
