FIFA will think again about the 48-team format at the 2026 World Cup

Doha

Fifa said he would again consider the 48-team format at World Cup 2026. This is after World Cup 2022 considered a great success.

The 2026 World Cup will be held in three countries, namely Canada, the United States and Mexico. The tournament in the next four years will mark a turning point with the addition of the number of participants, from 32 to 48 teams.

The plan is for the 48-team tournament to be held in 16 group formats, each containing three teams. The top two teams will qualify for the round of 32.

But considering that the 2022 World Cup is interesting and considered a huge success, FIFA will consider this format.

“Here the group of four teams went in an extraordinary way. Until the last minutes of the last match we don’t know who will go through,” he said Fifa president Gianni Infantino launched BBC.

“We need to review it, or at least discuss the format again. This is something that will definitely be on the agenda for the next meeting,” he added.

The 32-team format with each group containing four teams has been running since the 1998 World Cup. A string of surprising results and an interesting battle to qualify from the group stage followed this year.

Germany, Belgium and Uruguay failed to qualify. Morocco won their group and made it to the semi-finals, Spain were overtaken by Japan and Argentina struggled to secure passage into the final match.
