Lionel Messi is the world footballer 2022! After his phenomenal year, which he crowned with the world title, there could have been no other winner than the Argentine.
Behind Messi, the two Frenchmen Kylian Mbappé and Karim Benzema finished second and third. Robert Lewandowski, who won the election last year, was “only” twelfth.
From the Bundesliga, Sadio Mané (6th) was the only one in the top 10, Jude Bellingham was 13th.
As usual, the FIFA World Player of the Year was elected by the votes of the coaches and captains of all national teams that belong to FIFA. In addition, one journalist from each FIFA member country was allowed to cast a vote and the fans also had their votes.
As always, it is particularly interesting to see how the respective stars and national coaches have voted. From a German perspective, both Manuel Neuer and Hansi Flick voted for Messi as the winner.
Conspicuous feature 1: Mo Salah and Spain national coach Luis De La Fuente did not vote for Messi, Benzema or Mbappé in their top 3 – extremely surprising!
Conspicuous feature 2: It was not Cristiano Ronaldo who voted for Portugal, but Pepe. Strange that CR7 did not honor himself as the actual captain. It may also have something to do with the fact that he was left out of the election for world footballer.
