FIFA Testing the Wenger Law: New Offside Rule Proposed by Arsene Wenger

KOMPAS.com – FIFA will test the “Wenger Law”, the new offside rule proposed by legendary Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

Reported by Diario AS on Saturday (1/7/2023), FIFA and the International Football Association Agency (IFAB) will test the new offside rule.

The new offside rule is called the “Wenger Law” because it was proposed by former Arsenal coach, Arsene Wenger.

In the latest rules, a player is declared offside when their whole body passes the opposing team’s last defender.

Proposals regarding changes to the offside rules were submitted by Arsene Wenger since 2020.

Wenger submitted a proposal regarding changes to the offside rule in his capacity as FIFA Head of Global Development.

Wenger rate, the current offside rule does not make sense.

In more detail, the French figure highlighted the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) which went into every detail when deciding on a player in an offside position.

According to Wenger, body parts such as the nose, toes, shoulders or others that pass thinly from the last opposing player should not be claimed for offside.

Therefore, Wenger made a suggestion because these small things have such a big impact and can be detrimental to a team.

“The most difficult problem people have (with VAR) is the offside rule,” Wenger said as quoted by The Guardian.

“There was an offside decision involving a fraction of a centimeter, literally nose width. This is the right time to make a quick rule change.”

“There is room to change the rules and not say that part of the player’s nose is offside.”

“So, you are offside because you can score goals with that part of your body. On the other hand, you will not be offside if there is a body part that can score goals with the last defender,” said Wenger.

Regarding Wenger’s proposal, FIFA President Gianni Infantino in 2021 announced that the world football parent would test a new offside rule.

It is said that Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden (men’s U21 competition and women’s U19 competition) are said to be testing the new offside rule proposed by Arsene Wenger.
