FIFA sanctions the Honduran national team for fan behavior in a match against El Salvador

(CNN Spanish) – FIFA sanctioned the Honduran soccer team with a cash fine and the obligation to play its next World Cup qualifying match against Mexico behind closed doors, the Honduran National Soccer Federation reported this Friday in a statement. (Fenafuth).

The double sanction, which includes a penalty equivalent to about US$76,000, is the result of what the local Federation described as “regrettable behavior” by a group of fans during the match against El Salvador on January 30.

San Marino is the worst soccer team in the world, according to FIFA. These are his striking statistics

“The Federation, through the corresponding channels, will exercise its right of appeal, however, it regrets that due to inappropriate behavior against our players, officials and the fans themselves, Honduran soccer is affected again with heavy fines and the closure of the stadium” Fenafuth said in the statement.

Although the Honduran federation did not detail the incidents, local media reported that during the game against El Salvador – in which the locals fell 2-0 – several fans staged altercations that involved other attendees and even members of the National Police of Honduras.

In its statement, the Federation added that it “strongly condemns all these behaviors of racial and gender discrimination and any action or expression that harms human dignity and good customs.”

A request for additional information sent by CNN to FIFA had not been answered this Friday.

Honduras, which is in last place in the Concacaf standings heading to the Qatar 2022 World Cup, with only 3 points, travels to Panama on March 24, then will receive Mexico without an audience on the 27th of that month, and ends its participation for the away World Cup tie against Jamaica on March 30.
