FIFA rejected Chile’s appeal stating Ecuador was ineligible to play at the World Cup. FIFA has declared that the complaint will not hold up and that the World Cup in Ecuador and Qatar will be held.
Chile filed a complaint with FIFA in June, claiming that Byron Castillo, who played in eight qualifying matches for Ecuador, was born in Colombia. After the complaint was rejected, Chile filed an appeal. FIFA has now made it clear that Ecuador can play in the World Cup after rejecting this appeal. Castillo was born in Tumaco, Colombia, and Chile wanted the team to be banned from the World Cup because the player played the qualifiers. However, after examining the documents, FIFA dismissed the appeal claiming that the complaint was unfounded. Ecuador are in Group A alongside hosts from Qatar, Senegal and the Netherlands at the World Cup. The opening match between Qatar and Ecuador is on November 20.
