FIFA Imposes Transfer Embargo on Persija Jakarta and Four Other Indonesian Clubs

Jakarta (ANTARA) – World football body FIFA has imposed sanctions on Persija Jakarta and four other Indonesian clubs, in the form of a transfer embargo for three periods, FIFA said on its website on Tuesday.

The other four clubs are Persikab Bandung Regency, Persiraja Banda Aceh, SADA Sumut FC, and Persiwa Wamena.

The start of the punishment period for each club is not the same. Persija and Persiraja began their sentences on January 26 2024, while Persikab and SADA began their sentences on February 26 2024.

For Persiwa, the sentence was imposed starting from May 12 2022 and it has not been determined when it will be lifted. However, in principle, currently Persiwa no longer exists in Indonesian football competitions, after the merger with the Cirebon team, Bina Putra.

FIFA did not explain what cases the five clubs were punished for. However, citing the Player Status and Transfer Regulations and the FIFA Disciplinary Code, an embargo can be imposed for several reasons, such as overdue payment obligations, termination of a contract without good reason, and failure to pay relevant amounts in a timely manner.

A legal transfer embargo is a sanction that prevents a club from registering new players after recruiting players.

Clubs still have the right to bring in players, but recruited players cannot be registered with the national football association and in the end this makes the player unable to play.

Capital club Persija Jakarta was reported to FIFA by Marko Simic, after the Croatian striker’s salary payments were disrupted in 2022.

In 2023 FIFA granted Simic’s lawsuit and Persija at that time reportedly had to pay a total of IDR 25 billion to Simic.

But then in June 2023, Simic returned to the Kemayoran Tigers uniform, and was tied to a two-year contract. Many people believe that Simic’s return to Persija is a middle ground in their dispute, but until now Persija and Simic have never confirmed this.
