FIFA fines Brazil and Argentina after World Cup qualifying match riots

The world football association FIFA has imposed fines on both teams after the World Cup qualifying match between Brazil and Argentina was marred by riots.

As hosts, the Brazilians have to pay 50,000 Swiss francs (just under 54,000 euros) for failures in security management, while the Argentinians were fined 20,000 francs. In addition, the world champion has to pay a further 50,000 francs because of the misconduct of his fans in two more games.

Due to violent commotion in the stands of the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, the kick-off of the prestigious duel between the South American arch-rivals on November 22nd was delayed by 27 minutes. The clashes began shortly after the national anthems were played. Among other things, parts of benches and other objects were thrown by some fans. At least one person was injured.

The players initially tried to calm the situation, but then went into the dressing room. World champion Argentina led by superstar Lionel Messi won the game 1-0.
