The Best is in the place! Robert Lewandowski landed in Doha yesterday for the FIFA Club World Cup ™.
Thanks to their striker’s 24 goals in 19 league games, Bayern Munich lead the Bundesliga and hope to dismiss Ah Ahly in the World Cup semi-final on Monday. If they were to win the trophy at Qatar 2020, the Bavarians would clinch a historic six-fold, like Pep Guardiola’s FC Barcelona in 2009/10.
For FIFA.com, Lewandowski talks about this goal, Bayern’s UEFA Champions League triumph, his title The Best – FIFA Player and his current form.

Robert Lewandowski, you are going to play your first Club World Cup. Will it have a particular taste?
I think so. It will be special for everyone, not just me. The best team in Europe will face the best teams from other continents. It’s a new challenge for us. We want to win this trophy, that’s for sure.
Is it difficult to play against teams that come from all over the world, with different styles of play?
It won’t be new to us. In the national team, we play a lot of matches against teams from all over the world. It will be special, but we are ready. We prepared to try to win this title. We won everything that was possible in 2020 and this is the last title we have left to win. We know we are playing against the best teams from other continents. This is the next challenge and we are ready.

If you participate in this competition, it means that you have a good team. But no matter how good they are, we have to be better. We have to fight for this victory. We have to go on the attack from the kick-off. We have to show our best face and produce our best game to have a chance to beat them.

Are you having more difficulty this season?
Because of COVID, we have to play almost every three days. It’s very hard for all the teams and not just for us. Usually, we have a week, or even two weeks, between matches. It’s enormous. In addition, we must not forget that we will play the European Championship at the end of the season. We have to prepare for that, we have to stay on top all season. It’s the big challenge this year, but we are ready because before the start of the season, we knew it could happen. If you have the chance to win something, you have to be strong and focused.
How does it feel to win the Champions League?
It was absolutely fantastic. We had a magical evening. In fact, the whole day of the final was memorable. During the few seconds that followed the final whistle, I felt something very special. I don’t really know what it was, but I can say my dream has come true.
A victory in the Club World Cup would allow you to emulate Pep Guardiola’s FC Barcelona in 2009/10 …
Yes quite. I think winning the Club World Cup would be one of the greatest achievements in football history. We know we are very close to achieving this feat, but we must remain 100% focused. That would be wonderful. Not just for Bayern or for Germany, but it would be one of the most historic achievements in the world.

What does it mean to win the title of The Best – FIFA Player?
It means a lot to me. At first you don’t quite understand what it means, but in the days and weeks that follow you realize that you have won what is arguably the most important title of your life. It was awesome. But I know I won this title thanks to our collective titles. I hope we will continue to win trophies.
You don’t stop scoring goals. Do you think we’re seeing the best version of Lewandowski right now?
I try to keep my momentum going. It’s been said for years that I’m in top form, regardless of my age. I can still progress and improve, but I know I feel good. Every season I try to be the best version of myself.
