Copa Libertadores finals
Palmeiras has been in the Copa Libertadores final four times and lost three times, namely in 1961, 1968 and 2000. With Marcos, Junior Baiano, Roque Junior, Junior, Cesar Sampaio, Zinho, Alex and Paulo Nunes on the team in 1999 there was the only one so far Title win against Deportivo Cali. In the Intercontinental Cup, Palmeiras then narrowly fell behind against Manchester United.
Palmeiras also won the Copa Rio, the first intercontinental club tournament, in 1951. The eight participating teams included Austria Wien, Juventus Turin, Nacional Montevideo and Sporting Lisbon.
Santos was also four times in the finals and left the place three times as the winner. The team triumphed in 1962 and 1963 and then prevailed in the Intercontinental Cup, first against Benfica Lisbon and then against AC Milan. In the 2011 final, Neymar was the driving force behind the win against Penarol. At the subsequent FIFA Club World Cup, however, FC Barcelona with Lionel Messi proved too strong.

The king in green and the king of kings
Unlike many other clubs, at Palmeiras and Santos there is no doubt who was the greatest player in the club’s history. At FC Santos, of course, it is Pelé who has led the club to 24 titles in its incomparable 18-year career at Vila Belmiro, including six Brazilian championship titles, two Copa Libertadores wins and two Intercontinental Cup.
Curiously, Ademir da Guia, also one of the best footballers in Brazil, is hardly known outside the country because of Pele. Because he only made 14 international matches for Brazil and only played one World Cup game – the game for third place at the 1974 FIFA World Cup Germany ™ – because King played in the same position.
At his club, however, Ademir caused a sensation. He was the leading figure of the so-called “Academy”, the outstanding Palmeiras team, which won the Brazilian championship six times between 1960 and 1973, despite the strong competition from the star ensemble of Santos.

Der “Classic of Saudade”
From the dictionary: Missing (Brazilian-Portuguese):
A strong emotional state of nostalgic or melancholy longing for something absent or someone who is extremely important to you and / or who you love.
This term, which cannot be adequately translated as “nostalgia derby”, came up because fans missed the gripping duels between the rivals in the 1960s so much.

Palmeiras, Santos and the World Cup
So far, both clubs have nominated 24 players for Brazilian World Cup squads. The squad for the 1962 FIFA World Cup Chile ™ included the Palmeiras trio Djalma Santos, Zequinha and Vava and the seven Santos players Gilmar, Mauro, Zito, Mengalvio, Pepe, Pelé and Coutinho, no less than ten players from these two teams .
Finals
Palmeiras and Santos have met in four finals in two different competitions. Palmeiras won three of them, namely the Campeonato Paulista in 1928 and 1960 and the Copa do Brasil in 2015. The fish again won the playoff of the Campeonato Paulista 2015 against The Summer.
All four finals were fiercely competitive and came out very close. Twice the decision was only made on penalties and once even a play-off had to be scheduled after two draws.
