FIFA Bans Former Spanish Football Association President Luis Rubiales for Inappropriate Behavior at Women’s World Cup

Zurich (Switzerland): FIFA has banned former Spanish Football Association president Luis Rubiales for three years for kissing Spanish player Jennifer Hermoso without permission after the Women’s World Cup final.

FIFA announced on Monday that Rubiales has been banned. The decision was taken by FIFA’s disciplinary committee. The ban is for three years from all football-related activities at national and international levels. Rubiales was temporarily suspended by FIFA after the incident became controversial. After this, a three-year ban has now been imposed. The ban was for 90 days from August 26.

Following this, Rubiales resigned as president of the Spanish Football Association in September. The resignation came after receiving severe criticism for three weeks.

Jennifer Hermozo stated that Luis Rubiales kissed her without her permission. Rubiales, who had previously announced at the General Assembly of the Spanish Football Federation that he would not resign, had publicly said that he kissed Hermoso by mutual consent. After this, in a note shared on social media, the actor clarified that Rubiales kissed him without his permission. Hermoso also said that there was good pressure not to make the incident worse. Hermoso noted that Rubiales’ move was truly shocking and that he is speaking out now because no one, anywhere, should be a victim of such incidents.

Rubiales hugged the Spanish star and kissed her on the lips at the prize giving ceremony after Spain won the Women’s World Cup. He also kissed other actors on the cheek. This was as FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Queen Letizia of Spain and Princess Sofia looked on. The incident became controversial when Hermoso posted on Instagram that he did not like Rubiales’ behavior. The action of the president of the Spanish Football Association was the cause of great criticism both inside and outside the country. Later, many people including ministers came forward demanding his resignation. Liga F, Spain’s women’s football league, has called for Rubiales to be sacked and filed a complaint with the National Sports Council against misconduct. Spain’s Minister Irene Montero responded that this is an example of sexual violence that women experience daily. Rubiales’ actions were also criticized for tarnishing Spain’s title win.
