Fiery Inferno in Hawaiian Islands Leaves Thousands Homeless

55 are the victims of the fiery inferno in the Hawaiian Islands, and thousands were left homeless. The police announced that about a thousand people were missing. According to the locals, recovery from the disaster will take years.

The long coastline, once full of life, is now completely destroyed. Cars, streets and homes were burnt to ashes. 80% of the resort town of Lahaina was destroyed. 11,000 households are without power, and 15,000 tourists have left the second largest Hawaiian island, Maui.

“There used to be hotels, business buildings, restaurants down there. The wreckage can be seen in the distance, smoke still billowing from above. There is a heavy smell of smoke in the air. And here, at the port, many people tried to save themselves from the fire,” commented Marta Kellner – a reporter for “Sky News”.

And among the locals, the question arises as to why they were not warned earlier about the danger. Idris and his neighbor Damon jump into the ocean. They spent three hours clinging to the pier railing before being rescued by a Coast Guard boat.

“We heard explosions, screams. Like in a horror movie. I called the police three times, they said they couldn’t reach us, finally they ordered – “get into the water”. It was scary in the ocean. I prayed and said to myself: “let me not die today”, commented Idris.

Kandi escapes the fire on his moped.

“Some were found in their houses, under the rubble, holding hands. The fire surrounded their houses before they could escape,” she says.

Firefighters report progress in extinguishing the raging fires. However, conditions remain dangerous and unpredictable, they warned.

Winds caused by Hurricane Dora, as well as low humidity, are to blame for the spread of the fires.
