Laundrie (23) had returned from the voyage alone on 1 September. Two weeks later, he disappeared after telling his parents that he was going for a hike in a nature reserve.
At the end of October, after a search human remains found in a Florida swamp area not far from his childhood home. Laundrie was identified by his teeth. How he had died was not disclosed at the time.
Laundrie was never charged with the murder of Petito, but was charged with fraud with his fiancé’s bank card.
The case received a lot of attention on social and traditional media in the US and beyond. This led to criticism from many people, who thought that the missing case of a young white woman disproportionate attention compared to missing persons cases of many black women.
