With the graduation exhibition of the Bachelor’s and Master’s students of the Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN), the Basel School of Art and Design FHNW (HGK Basel) will be visiting the Kunsthaus Baselland for the ninth time from August 31, 2024 to September 15, 2024. The exhibition includes new works by over 50 up-and-coming artists and continues the long-standing collaboration at the new location of the Kunsthaus Baselland in the immediate vicinity of the Dreispitz campus of the HGK Basel FHNW.

In order to underline the special character of a diploma exhibition in a renowned art institution and in the training of artists who are in the transition from the familiar environment of an art school to the challenges of working as professional artists, the exhibition is curated by renowned guest curators together with Chus Martínez, Head of the Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN) at the HGK Basel FHNW. On the occasion of the new location and the new neighborhood, this year it is Ines Goldbach, Director of the Kunsthaus Baselland.

“This is our first graduation exhibition in the recently opened new building of the Kunsthaus Baselland,” say the two curators Ines Goldbach and Chus Martínez. “That’s why we decided to work together again: just like in 2016, when we curated the graduation exhibition together for the first time.”

Almost a decade later, the exhibition of newly produced works by the third-year Bachelor students and second-year Master students of the Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN) at the HGK Basel FHNW has become a permanent fixture in Basel’s cultural calendar. Both curators, lecturers and the teams of the IAGN and the Kunsthaus Baselland have worked for almost a year on the conception and production of the works created especially for this occasion.

This year’s title of the exhibition – “You Can Break A Rock with an Egg” – refers to an old Chinese proverb and at the same time resonates with the current efforts of artists in our society. What all the artists involved have in common is their insistence on believing in the necessity of the impossible: an equal society, a society that lives with the values and respect for all forms of life and the possibility of living a life in balance, in the experience of art and culture.

Each work looks into the mind and our world in a personal and specific way. All the works invite us to follow their path and free our minds from the constraints and obligations of everyday life. The exploration of the materiality of the world is very present in the exhibition, along with the creation of experiences that promote a sense of care, a responsibility towards nature and a commitment to poetic and fantastical worlds.
