FGP Karlstad Distance Duel: Thobias Montler vs Héctor Santos with a Centimeter Separating Them

05 JULY 2023 | 6:35 | ANNA-LENA PETTERSON

The FGP in Karlstad offered a distance duel between the Spaniard Héctor Santos and Thobias Montler. In the end, it was a centimeter that separated them both.

There were, of course, hopes for a jump over eight meters when Thobias Montler stood on the runway during the evening’s long distance competition. He didn’t really get that far, but it was close.

Thobias jumped a lofty jump that measured a high seven meters at the start of the competition. And before the third round he led the competition with a jump of 7.95, one centimeter longer than the Spaniard Héctor Santos and with those results the two longest jumps of the competition had been made. Santos did not manage to increase, but finished second behind Thobias.

– Even though it was raining, the audience warmed it up. What an audience we have, said Thobias Montler who was satisfied after the competition:

– Today was a big step in the right direction. The speed is starting to come back now, he said.

“A hot dog from 70 meters”

Grete Ahlberg had a good hammer competition in Karlstad. Her series measured between 67.66 and 68.12 and was able to go home with the victory.

– I kept a steady and high level today, I had lost it a little during the pre-season and I have been a little stressed about it. This creates good conditions for, hopefully, a WC, she said after the competition.

Grete had a throw in the last round that landed outside the sector, but looked really far and Grete stepped away to measure the throw herself.

– It was a hot dog from 70 meters, she stated.

Hanna Hermansson second on a new year’s best

When it came time for the women to run 800 meters, the opening was tougher than many of the runners had anticipated. The rock-hard opening flagged after a lap for times under two minutes, but it wasn’t quite that fast, and they lost at the end. It was a trio that settled for victory at the end. The winning time was 2:02.38 for Annemarie Nissen from Denmark and Hanna Hermansson sprinted up to second place and finished in 2:02.67. Polish Patrycja Wyciszkiewicz-Zawadzka came third,
