Due to the number of injuries that Feyenoord has to deal with during this period, Arne Slot has a lot of puzzling to do. After the match with AS Roma, the trainer spoke out about the busy schedule, which does not do his selection any good.
The number of top matches that the Rotterdam team has to complete takes its toll. “I completely agree with Ronald Koeman who says that the big matches have more impact on a player’s body,” Slot begins during the closing press conference. “We knew our program, we can’t hide behind it, but it is no surprise at all that we are dealing with so many injuries.”
The injuries do not come out of the blue for him. “In a period when you are missing four boys because they were active in the Africa Cup and the Asian Cup, you have to continue to rely on the same players. Finally, the Rotterdam team has not previously been in a cluster with top competitions that follow each other in rapid succession. “The difference is simply completing a series of matches that regularly include opponents who have less impact on duels or a tougher programme. Against Roma you see what I also saw against FC Twente, PSV and AZ. Against some opponents my wins players ten out of ten duels, now sometimes only five or six out of ten. The impact and the force where you have to keep running and entering into duels increases the chance that they will become tired and therefore be injured.”
The selection therefore has a physically difficult time with a match such as the one against AS Roma, Slot bases this on the number of injuries. “I notice that in this program, not if you look at the number of matches because that was also last year. plays a lot of top matches in a short period of time. The breadth of the selection also plays a role. “If you are already missing players and you also get rid of a player (Javairo Dilrosun) during the winter break. Or point to the way in which our players are prepared for such a series. In my opinion, that really has entirely to do with the limited number of players.”
