Eight goals, three penalties, tension and sensation. The battle for the Johan Cruijff Shield XXXVIII between national champion PSV and cup winner Feyenoord turned into a spectacle on Sunday. After regular playing time (4-4) did not produce a winner, the wonderful football evening was decided by penalties. Feyenoord was the sharpest in this and won the match for the Johan Cruijff Shield for the fifth time.

Three times the Rotterdammers had taken the lead in the Philips Stadium. Three times PSV came back. From eleven meters Feyenoord did not give it away in the penalty shootout.

The season opener in Eindhoven was a true spectacle. With the audience as the big winner and both goalkeepers as standouts. PSV got off to a good start with an early goal by Noa Lang. Feyenoord turned things around before half-time with goals by Santiago Giménez (penalty) and Bart Nieuwkoop. Immediately after half-time, Luuk de Jong evened the score: 2-2.

Back and forth

After that, the game ebbed and flowed. With chances for both teams. Giménez hit his second penalty, after which substitute Guus Til made it 3-3 again. Another substitute, Antoni Milambo, put Feyenoord ahead for the third time, but again the Rotterdammers could not consolidate it. Luuk de Jong shot his team to 4-4 from 11 meters.

Since there was no extra time in this match, the match had to be decided directly with a penalty shootout. After goalkeeper Timo Wellenreuther saved Johan Bakayoko’s effort and Guus Til shot high over, the team of the new Danish coach Brian Priske made no mistake and Feyenoord won the first major prize of the 2024/’25 season.

The first main prize of the 2024/’25 season goes to Feyenoord.
