The match between Celtic and Atlético Madrid did not produce a winner. In Glasgow the final score was 2-2 after an exciting match. Celtic took the lead twice through Kyogo Furuhashi and Luis Palma; Atlético came back twice through Antoine Griezmann and Álvaro Morata. The draw means that Feyenoord, which won 3-1 against Lazio earlier in the evening, is the new leader in Group H. The Rotterdam team has six points, followed by Atlético (five), Lazio (four) and Celtic (one).
On the Celtic side, Furuhashi had to provide the goals. The Japanese was flanked by compatriot Daizen Maeda and Honduran Palma. Memphis was still missing from Atlético due to an injury, as were José María Giménez and Samuel Lino, among others. Diego Simeone gave confidence to Griezmann and Morata in the forward line; Ángel Correa had to make do with a substitute appearance.
The match was less than four minutes old when Celtic took the lead. After a flashy attack, Matt O’Riley reached striker Furuhashi for the game. The Japanese left Jan Oblak without a chance with a shot from close range: 1-0. However, Celtic suffered an early setback with the retirement of Reo Hatate, who had to be replaced by Paulo Bernardo.
Atlético had difficulty with the very fierce play of the Bhoys, who were urged on by their equally fanatical supporters. Yet Atlético slowly but surely came closer. Griezmann met Joe Hart in the short corner and the Madrilenians continued to push. It led to a penalty halfway through the second half. De Paul made a through ball to Molina, who was tapped from behind by Taylor. Griezmann missed his penalty via Hart and the post, but was lucky that the rebound fell right at his feet: 1-1.
The disappointment at Celtic Park was short-lived. Palma was reached by Maeda on the right side of the sixteen and shot devastatingly from the inside of the post: 2-1. Celtic certainly didn’t take their foot off the accelerator after that. The Spaniards barely had time to play football themselves and got away well when Oblak plucked an O’Riley attempt from the top corner. Once again, Atlético seemed to level the score out of nowhere. A free kick from Griezmann ended up via Savic at Witsel, who headed it home. However, it turned out that he had done that in an offside position.
At the start of the second half, Atlético coach Diego Simeone decided to bring in two fresh players with Rodrigo Riquelme and Marcos Llorente. The latter was immediately worth his weight in gold a few minutes later by giving a perfect lead at the second post after an impressive rush, where Morata headed in beautifully: 2-2. Atlético then pressed further. Morata came close to his second goal of the evening, if his shot had not been saved by Hart.
In the final phase, Celtic suddenly received a helping hand from Rodrigo De Paul. The Argentinian made a late tackle and hit Paulo Bernardo: second yellow. With eleven against ten, Celtic did not immediately attack. In fact, Atlético continued to look for the winning goal. However, the Scots held firm, making the final score 2-2. Feyenoord is therefore the new leader in Group E.
