Calvin Stengs suffered an apparently serious injury during injury time of Feyenoord – FC Groningen. The midfielder and winger went to the ground after a duel with Marvin Peersman and broke down in tears.
The match between Feyenoord and Groningen came to an end at 2-1, when Peersman launched a hard tackle from behind on Stengs’ legs. Feyenoord’s attack continued, but did not result in a goal.

A little later, Luka Ivanusec decided to play the ball outside after all, when Stengs’ injury turned out to be very serious. The left paw clutched his right knee, groaning in pain.
Commentator Leo Oldenburger fears the worst. “It is clear that he is suffering. Look how Peersman comes in, man. The pain is clear, the anger must be aimed at Peersman and the arbitration that this goes unpunished.”
“Players who bury their faces in their shirts reveal that the pain is special and considerable and the fear of a serious injury is increasing. The absentee list at Feyenoord was already so long,” said Oldenburger.
Stengs eventually had to be carried off the field on a stretcher. He received a big round of applause from The Legion. Feyenoord won the semi-final against Groningen 2-1.
‘Dirty violation’
Jan Joost van Gangelen and Kees Kwakman are shocked by the images. “This is really a very dirty violation. We couldn’t see it very well because we were walking downstairs. Of course it is not his intention to injure Stengs.”
“They will probably say something from the VAR center about ‘intensity’ and that it is not hard, but see how things turn out with Stengs. I am quick to draw red cards, but as far as I am concerned you can get a red card for this give,” Kwakman said.
