Feyenoord now beats PSV and will meet AZ in the cup quarter finals | General

Jan 24, 2024 at 9:59 PM Update: 6 minutes ago

Feyenoord reached the quarter-finals of the KNVB cup tournament at the expense of PSV on Wednesday. The Rotterdam team, who lost twice to the Eindhoven team before the winter break, won 1-0 in De Kuip thanks to a goal from Quinten Timber.

Timber scored in the 31st minute and it was not undeserved. Feyenoord was stronger in the first half, although Luuk de Jong could also have scored. After the break there were chances on both sides, but no more goals were scored.

With the victory, Feyenoord can continue to hope for their first cup win since 2018, while Eredivisie leader PSV can forget about the first ‘double’ since 2005. Feyenoord’s opponent in the quarter-finals is AZ in De Kuip on Wednesday, February 7.

For PSV, the loss is the second blow in four days. The winning streak in the Eredivisie came to an end against FC Utrecht (1-1) on Wednesday and now there has been the first defeat under coach Peter Bosz in the Netherlands.

It was exactly a year ago that PSV last lost a match in their own country. On January 24, 2003, PSV lost 1-0 to FC Emmen under Ruud van Nistelrooij, followed by an unbeaten run of forty matches.

Nieuwkoop starts as a right winger

After Feyenoord lost to PSV in the battle for the Johan Cruijff Shield (0-1) and in the Eredivisie (1-2), coach Arne Slot tried something different on Wednesday evening. Right back Bart Nieuwkoop started as a right winger, also to restrain the offensive PSV back Sergiño Dest.

Slot’s choice turned out well. Feyenoord was better before half time, although the home team escaped in the opening phase after a fumble by goalkeeper Justin Bijlow. Johan Bakayoko couldn’t get the ball in and missed another chance moments later.

During the first half, Feyenoord took the initiative and created opportunities. Nieuwkoop steamed past Dest, after which Igor Paixão shot just wide. It was scored in the 32nd minute. Timber was able to take a shot in the penalty area, while PSV’s defense looked on. The midfielder scored with a low shot in the corner (1-0).

Even after the opening goal, Feyenoord continued to improve, but there was still a huge opportunity before halftime for PSV captain De Jong, who was able to continue towards Bijlow. To De Kuip’s relief, the goalkeeper prevented the equalizer.

Bosz intervenes halfway

PSV’s poor first half made coach Bosz decide to intervene halfway through. André Ramalho and Malik Tillman were substituted for Patrick van Aanholt and Mauro Júnior.

With Jerdy Schouten in the center back, PSV’s build-up improved. Nine minutes after the break there was another chance for PSV, but Bijlow again saved the day. He turned Bakayoko’s shot and Guus Til failed to get the rebound. At the other newspaper, PSV goalkeeper Joël Drommel turned a shot from Paixão.

It became an exciting match, with a questionable moment with substitute Noa Lang. The winger was hit in the penalty area by Mats Wieffer, but referee Dennis Higler did not consider it a penalty. He drew yellow for the protesting Lang.

On the other hand, the 2-0 was close. Wieffer’s header went just wide and Gernot Trauner’s effort was cleared off the line. An exciting final phase followed, although it did not provide enormous opportunities for PSV. Timber could have scored again in the final phase, but shot straight into the hands of Drommel. The score remained 1-0, but that was of course enough for euphoria in De Kuip afterwards.
