The court in Rome on Thursday sentenced six Feyenoord supporters to hefty prison terms for their part in the riots in the Italian capital in 2015. These are prison sentences of three years and eight months to four years, the Italian news agency reports. Askanews.
The riots took place in February 2015 around the Europa League match AS Roma against Feyenoord. A few officers were injured, historic buildings were damaged and shops closed as a precaution.
At the end of that year, 44 rioters in the Netherlands were already convicted for their part in the disturbances. A man who dropped a firework bomb at the Italian police was sentenced to eighteen months in prison, six months of which was suspended. The 43 others received community service.
Six years later, six supporters will receive an even heavier penalty. The Italian court finds proven guilty of sedition, public assault and misconduct against the police. In addition to imprisonment for up to four years, they will be fined 3,000 euros.
Six not present in court
The six belonged to the group of supporters arrested six years ago, but they were not present at the session in Rome on Thursday.
According to the lawyer, the six are currently “untraceable”, it reports AD. He announced that the supporters are appealing. If it actually comes to a prison sentence, then the supporters in the Netherlands can serve.
The riots in Rome six years ago caused many angry reactions, both in the Netherlands and in Italy. The Barcaccia fountain at the Spanish Steps, among other things, was damaged.
