Feyenoord will again meet AS Roma in the context of the Europa League. Last season, no Feyenoord supporters were welcome in Rome, after which it was decided not to allow Italian fans in De Kuip. Rotterdam Mayor Aboutaleb intends to change this for the upcoming meeting.
Aboutaleb says he wants to commit himself to normalization, as he begins in the Renze program. “The first match is in Rotterdam, and then in Rome. My first move is to determine whether or not the Romans will come to Rotterdam. I still have to think about that for a while, but I very much intend to really talk to the Romans and Home Affairs.” The Rotterdam mayor acknowledges that the relationship between the two local authorities is not running smoothly and wants to take the initiative. “This feud really needs to end at some point. From a sporting point of view, there is no reason to keep away fans away from each other any longer. My intention is to do that better now.”
The fact that part of the Legion is not always satisfied with the measures he takes around the club has not escaped the mayor’s notice. “I am sometimes seen as a strict mayor, some Feyenoord supporters think so. In general, people think that I stand next to them and try to do things with them,” says Aboutaleb.
The mayor resolutely dismisses the fact that some supporters believe that he has something against Feyenoord. Aboutaleb says he really enjoyed the national title won this year and the subsequent party on the Coolsingel. “Feyenoord supporters always get very emotional at such a party. I cannot go along with that, because I have to take safety measures and organize everything.” He recognizes that Feyenoord plays a major role in the city. “I have sometimes said that Feyenoord gives more DNA to the city than the Maas. The identity of the city is thus linked to Feyenoord. It runs in the veins of many people. For example, you see that people in politics find it difficult to meet when Feyenoord is playing.”
