Fewer weddings and more divorces in 2023

Accordingly, 44,948 couples tied the knot, 2,534 fewer than in 2022 (minus 5.3 percent), meaning that civil weddings have returned to the level of the pre-Corona years. At the same time, 14,033 marriages ended in divorce, 36 more, it said on Tuesday.

The possibility of same-sex marriage, which has existed since 2019, was 2.4 percent fewer in 2023 than in the previous year. There were a total of 772 couples: 359 male and 413 female. The preliminary data for 2023 also includes 38 conversions of registered partnerships into marriages.

Plus 5.8 percent in Upper Austria

The largest declines in weddings were registered in Salzburg (minus 8.8 percent), followed by Carinthia (−8.4 percent) and Styria (minus 7.5 percent). Only in Burgenland were slightly more marriages (plus 0.5 percent) concluded than in 2022. The 14,033 divorces were 13.5 percent fewer than the average for the pre-Corona years 2015 to 2019 and 0.3 percent more than in 2022.

Compared to 2022, the number rose most significantly in Tyrol (plus 9.1 percent), followed by Carinthia (plus 8.1 percent) and Upper Austria (plus 5.8 percent). There were fewer divorces in Vienna (minus 5.7 percent), Styria (minus 4.0 percent), Burgenland (minus 1.3 percent) and Lower Austria (minus 0.9 percent).
