Private individuals, who account for about half of the market, bought fewer speed pedelecs last year (-6.6 percent). Companies opt more for leasing formulas than for purchase. “But the popularity of the speed pedelec as a company bicycle in 2019 will no longer be achieved. Bicycle dealers confirm that the speed pedelec remains a niche market, even in Flanders, which certainly still has potential in our traffic-prone urban regions,” says Rylant.
Today there are about 56,000 speed pedelecs in Belgium, the majority in Flanders. That may be an underestimate because not all of them are registered.
