The fire brigade operations in Baden-Württemberg decreased significantly in the past year. The number of missions in the “Ländle” fell by almost six percent. The main reason for this is likely to have been the corona pandemic.

A total of 111,302 missions were completed in 2020. That is 5.8 percent less than in 2019. 50,677 missions (45.5 percent) involved technical assistance, 18,139 fire operations (16.3 percent) and almost 20 percent (22,161 operations) related to false alarms. 11.3 percent (12,520 missions) were other alarms, for example to save animals. 7,805 missions (seven percent) belong to the ambulance service and ambulance transports.

The most common cause of false alarms are fire alarm systems and smoke alarms in private households. However, their number in Baden-Württemberg fell by 7.7 percent compared to 2019. A smaller decrease of “only” 2.9 percent was recorded for fire-fighting operations. During these missions and those for technical assistance, 11,114 people were rescued by the municipal fire brigades in 2020. In 2019 there were 12,857. 1,554 people could only be rescued dead. In 2019 there were 1,595.

99 professional firefighters and 800 volunteer firefighters were injured on the part of the rescuers. These are clear declines compared to 2019. At that time, 162 professional firefighters and 1,516 members of volunteer fire brigades were injured. However, the number of injuries at the plant fire brigades increased. There were hardly any changes in the number of fire fighters in the “Ländle” or in the proportion of women.
