In the US state of New York, which has been particularly hard hit by the corona pandemic, the situation in the hospitals has eased somewhat. The number of Covid-19 patients has fallen continuously over the past three days, said Governor Andrew Cuomo.
That is good news, said the Democrat at his daily press conference on Saturday, but at the same time referred to the continued high death rate. The day before, 540 people died of a coronavirus infection and another 2,000 people tested positive. In total, more than 226,000 people have already been infected and more than 16,000 have died in the state with around 19 million inhabitants.
Cuomo emphasized that significantly more tests were necessary before thinking of opening up the economy in New York. There are still bottlenecks in the test procedures. The governor asked for additional assistance from Washington. On Thursday, Cuomo extended the relatively strict exit restrictions in New York until mid-May.
