fewer cases and deaths, but an inevitable 3rd wave?

COVID FRANCE. The Covid-19 continues to circulate less and kill less in France, but in the opinion of some specialists, a third wave is already preparing. The latest news live.

  • The latest report from Public Health France reports more than 11,000 cases of Covid-19 in France identified in 24 hours. This figure certainly reflects a continuing decline in the number of new daily cases – they were 86,852 on November 7 -, but it also allows us to state that this decline, which has continued for several weeks, appears to be reaching a plateau. Despite a confinement still in force, social interactions are more and more numerous and this could soon reverse the curve.
  • For some specialists, the third wave is a threat to be taken very seriously. The infectious disease specialist Odile Launay, invited this Monday by BFMTV and RMC, estimated that there was “a good chance of having a third wave”. And do not count on the imminent arrival of the Covid-19 vaccine : there is “no risk of preventing it”, this third wave. In this perspective, the Christmas holidays promise to be decisive. “It depends on how the French will respect the instructions given to them,” said Odile Launay.
  • The goal of getting out of confinement, set for December 15, is clearly called into question. Despite a continuous decline since mid-November, the number of daily contaminations is still far from the 5,000 cases on a weekly average, a condition set by the government for deconfinement. This objective “is not attainable because the curve stops falling, it stabilizes”, estimated this Monday on LCI Eric Caumes, infectious disease specialist at the hospital of La Pitié-Salpêtrière (Paris).
  • Good news: the ARS of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes has authorized the hospitals of the Loire, one of the departments having been one of the most affected in the second wave, to gradually resume the deprogrammed operations, because they are considered not urgent, during the second confinement.

11:13 – “Imposing a vaccine can be a source of mistrust and mistrust”

France Bleu Gironde interviewed Professor Charles Cazanave, infectious disease specialist at Bordeaux University Hospital, about the vaccine against Covid-19. The doctor believes that not making the vaccine compulsory is a good thing: “There are already a lot of compulsory vaccines in France since 2018 on old diseases with treatments on which we have a lot of perspective. That’s it and it is. is going well overall. For the Covid, not to impose it seems interesting to me. We must first do information and education work in a pedagogical sense, so that people understand the value of the vaccine and adhere to the treatment. Imposing a vaccine can be a source of mistrust and mistrust “.

10:41 – The latest figures in the Alpes-Maritimes

According to the latest report of the Covid-19 in the Alpes-Maritimes dated December 6, the number of people hospitalized is 474 in the department, with sixteen new admitted in the last 24 hours. 55 patients are in intensive care in this territory of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. The occupancy rate of intensive care beds on December 6, at the regional level, was 76.1%. As a reminder, the department is classified as high vulnerability.

10:26 – Without vaccination, successive waves?

As a third wave of coronavirus is looming, infectious disease specialist Eric Caumes has encouraged the French to get vaccinated, as soon as possible. “If the population does not adhere sufficiently to vaccination, we will be forced to receive successive waves until the appearance of collective immunity. We will only get out of this epidemic through collective immunity”, a- he estimated, judging that this collective immunity should be better “vaccine rather than natural”.

10:15 – Pécresse calls for massive screening after the holidays

As the end of year celebrations are looming, Valérie Pécresse has invited all the inhabitants of the Ile-de-France region, of which she is president, to go get tested at the end of this period. “We will need all Ile-de-France residents to go and get tested the day after the holidays”, she insisted on France Inter. The former minister said she wanted to avoid the “Thanksgiving effect” observed in the United States.

Thursday, December 3 in the evening, Public Health France published as every weekend its last weekly epidemiological update on the epidemic for week 48 (from 23 to 29 November 2020). These points, more detailed than the daily reports issued each evening, shed more light on the health situation in the country each week. In summary, SPF indicates that the decline in the circulation of Covid-19 continues on French territory. Here are the key points to remember:

  • Further decline in Covid-19 circulation indicators, but less marked than in week 47. While it is advisable to be satisfied that the indicators fall again in week 48, the drop is nevertheless less important than between W46 and W47. The test positivity rate is now 10.7% (13% in W47, -2.3 points). The incidence rate (number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants) is 96 W48, while it was 152 in W47, (decrease of -36.5%). This incidence rate remains high among those aged 75 and over: it is 189.
  • The number of new Covid-19 cases decreases further in week 48. 64,609 new cases confirmed by RT-PCR were reported, which is a sharp decrease compared to week 47 when 101,735 new cases were reported, or -36.5%. In addition, Public Health France notes that during week 48, the decrease in the number of new contact cases continues.
  • In week 48, the decrease in declarations of new hospitalizations for Covid-19 observed in previous weeks continues and this in all regions of mainland France. 9,382 new hospitalizations were declared against 13,585 in W47, ie -31%. The decrease in declarations of new intensive care admissions observed in previous weeks also continued in W48, with 1,391 new intensive care admissions against 2,069 in W47, ie -33%. This concerns all regions, except Corsica where new admissions in sheaves have increased (+ 25%).
  • The mortality rate linked to Covid-19 remains high, even if the decrease in declarations of deaths occurring during hospitalization observed the previous week continues. In week 48, 2,490 new deaths were declared, against 2,685 in week 47, ie -7%. It should be noted that the number of returns home from Covid patients decreased in week 48, from 10,016 in week 48 to 12,136 in W47, or -17%.
  • The regions most affected by Covid-19 remain Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, both in terms of virus circulation and pressure in the hospital.
