Fewer and fewer indebted households in the North

The number of over-indebtedness files filed in the North in 2021 fell by 17.5% compared to 2019 (2020 being considered an atypical year due to the covid crisis). The Banque de France handled 7,302 cases in this way. In 52% of cases, it was a first procedure. 42.9% of these procedures resulted in total cancellation of debts in the department. Kathie Werquin, regional director of the Banque de France, guest of France Bleu Nord, specifies that one in two people does not have the capacity to repay and that it is therefore not necessary “bet on the rebound hoping that the situation improves“. Today we are talking about “personal recovery”which means a cancellation of debts and therefore the rebound of people in difficulty.

In the North, in 2021, the median debt (excluding real estate) of over-indebted households amounts to 12,900 euros against 13,483 euros in the region and 16,075 euros in France. Unsurprisingly, people who find themselves in this situation often live below the poverty line (18% of inhabitants of Hauts-de-France but 67% of over-indebtedness cases in the North). The regional management of the Banque de France also observes more single women with children and more unemployed people.

What to do when you are in a situation of over-indebtedness?

The declaration of over-indebtedness is a free measurement, it is a public service. You can go to the counters of the Banque de France or call 34 14 or even file your application online.
