Vegetables are found at the bottom of the food pyramid, which means they can be consumed in large quantities. In fact, the foods present in this band of the pyramid are particularly recommended in a healthy diet. Among the most common and widespread vegetables in the world there is one that is used much more often than the others, celery. However, few know that the consumption of this famous vegetable could cause serious damage to health.
Pay attention to the allergen list
Celery is present in many preparations and we are not always aware of it. As this is a food allergen it is possible that the intake of this vegetable trigger an allergic reaction. People allergic to celery usually have symptoms such as:
- skin itching, hives and edema;
- wheezing, asthma and a feeling of suffocation in the respiratory system;
- allergic and, in some cases, anaphylactic reactions.
It is therefore advisable for these subjects to check the presence of this food in the list of allergens before ordering at the restaurant.
Avoiding celery is not enough
Many people may be allergic to celery without their knowledge. In fact, there seems to be a correlation between allergy to birch or ragweed pollen and allergy to celery. In this case, it is convenient to limit (or stop) the consumption of vegetables during the period in which these pollens are present in the environment. This phenomenon is said cross allergy.
Cross-allergy occurs when the protein of a substance to which you are allergic is present in a product of a different type. The case of pollen and celery is an example of this phenomenon, but it is not the only way in which there is a risk of cross allergy occurring. In fact, just think of our refrigerator. The products contained in our refrigerator risk being “contaminated” by celery if it is not well closed or separated from the rest. It is therefore very useful to pay some extra attention to the way in which food is stored in the refrigerator. Celery, as well as other allergenic foods, should be closed in a special container to avoid coming into contact with other products.
Celery is widely used in cooking, but few know that the consumption of this famous vegetable could cause serious damage to the health of some people.
