Festive suggestions for Canada Day

With Canada Day taking place this week, we have a good excuse to suggest some Canadian wines and products that will enhance your dinners and small parties. As a bonus, and as far as being chauvinistic, here are three wines that were created by Quebecers, very much from here! Have a good long holiday and health!

Trois Moineaux Wismer Lakeview Vineyard Riesling Twenty Mile Bench 2020

The Trois Moineaux adventure began with the shared passion for wine of a restaurant owner, a marketing director and a Quebec wine distributor. Our three companions have chosen the Niagara region to produce their cuvées. Their dedication to doing well and their expertise (gleaned from other experienced winemakers), has resulted in bringing to market wines made in the best place found in the Niagara Valley for everyone. For example, this fresh and crisp Riesling was made with grapes from the Twenty Mile Bench, where the escarpment and the geology of the soils give minerality to the wines. The cuvées are also made from old vines harvested by hand and natural yeasts (giving a little raw side to the wine). This dry Riesling immediately won me over on the nose with its aromas of lemon, white flowers and fine herbs. On the palate, its acidity is very lively and notes of sour green apple, lemon and coriander emerge. Delicious on those hot days with sushi or a nice garden salad!

Bachelder La Purité Chardonnay Niagara Escarpment 2021

This wine was created by a Quebecer expatriated in the Niagara region to produce wines having a kinship with Burgundy! When you taste it, you understand why: it does have some similarities with Chablis. How is it possible? Some Niagara appellations have soils and climates that may resemble the famous French wine region. Then there is the work and the enlightened choices of the winemaker. Coming from a single duly selected terroir, the grapes have been vinified judiciously to preserve the flavors. By not using wood, the producer obtains a result that highlights the purity of the terroir in the glass. This 2021 vintage is even more complex than the 2019, with a touch of wet pebbles on the palate and a long and sustained finish. Ideal with seafood or as an aperitif.

Sandbanks Cabernet Merlot French Kiss 2018

The success story of this PEC County winery in Ontario is interesting. Originally from Île d’Orléans, Catherine Langlois studied at the ITHQ in Montreal. With experience in the wine industry in Bordeaux and Ontario, she founded the Sandbanks vineyard 20 years ago. A pioneer of wines in the region – there were only 3 vineyards in 2001 and this figure has more than doubled today – the winegrower had seen the potential of this region with its bucolic charm to grow vines with a qualitative yield. These wines, including French Kiss, quickly garnered numerous accolades and also captured the attention of wine critics and wine lovers in the region. Sandbanks Winery ended up being bought by the Arterra group, which perpetuates the offer of wines registered in their new portfolio. French Kiss is the fusion of 3 French grape varieties (70% cabernet-franc, 15% cabernet-sauvignon and 15% merlot) that literally kiss each other to form the perfect blend! Fleshy but also voluptuous, with tannins melted like velvet, we appreciate this warm and gourmet wine, with notes of black cherry and vanilla, with a peppery and slightly woody finish. Ideal for your grilling on the barbecue!
