No masks, no one and a half meters, no closing times: in the Serbian city of Novi Sad tens of thousands of visitors went wild day and night in Petrovaradin, the famous fortress that has been the setting of the Exit Festival for more than twenty years. Anyone who could show a negative PCR test or proof of vaccination in advance was given unlimited access to all activities on the site for four days. It was possible to spend the night in one of the many hotels, hostels or at a campsite nearby.
The fans knew all too well that Exit Festival might be the only big party this year. They came from more than seventy different countries (!) to the festival to go wild with David Guetta, DJ Shadow and Sabaton, all established names who were allowed to return to the stage after more than a year’s break. “It’s one big adventure here”, says Djordje Petrovic, better known as DJ Satori, behind the scenes. In an hour, the artist from Nijmegen with Serbian roots has to perform on the biggest stage of the festival. “I really can’t wait. The relief that we are allowed again is enormous. Not just with me, but with everyone here.”
