Festival summary and winners of the 56th Karlovy Vary Film

A week with fantastic summer weather, filled thermal water jugs and many memorable screenings comes to an end: The 56th edition of the “Karlovy Vary International Film Festivals“ once again proved why the prestigious Czech film festival is definitely one of the most beautiful film locations in the festival calendar. The successful mixture of festival showcase and a best-of of the previous festival year as well as successful world and international premieres in the competition sections, such as this year for the first time in the Proxima section, also have one or the other film highlight this year bestows. But of course all beautiful things come to their (well-deserved) end at some point: As always, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival not only celebrates all prize winners of the official competition categories in the gala closing ceremony, but can usually also look forward to star guests who come from the festival be honored for their life’s work or their achievements in world cinema. This year this honor went to the exceptional Australian actor Geoffrey Rush Part, who not only celebrated his 71st birthday in Karlovy Vary, but also appeared in some of his best roles on the big screen in Karlovy Vary, including the Oscar-winning films “The King’s Speech” and “Shine”. Also his Hollywood colleague Benicio del Toro was awarded by the President of the Festival.

But of course the focus was on the award winners of the 56th KVIFF: The Iranian filmmaker was particularly pleased Sadaf Foroughiwho for their competition entry “Summer with Hope” was awarded the main prize of the festival. In her speech, the touched director said: “We live in a world full of violence and discrimination. I hope that our story can bring peace and tranquility.” The Special Jury Prize went to the Spanish film „You Have to Come and See It“ von Jonas Trueba. A local favorite was also among the festival’s big winners: the Czech film “The Word“ von Beata Parkanová not only gave the director a coveted crystal globe, but also the leading actor Martin Finger. This time there was even a double pack of “Best Actress”: both actresses in the Georgian competition film “A Room of my Own“, namely Mariam Khundadze and Such Mumladze, were honored as the best actresses of the festival. Both also contributed to the screenplay of the festival. The German competition entry “The Ordinaries“ von Sophie Linnenbaum Unfortunately, the prize was awarded empty handed.
