Festival and award show around World Press Photo in Amsterdam are canceled | NOW

The World Press Photo festival and award show announcing the winners are canceled due to the corona virus.

The World Press Photo Festival would take place from April 16-18, and the winning photos would be announced April 16 on the grounds of the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam. In total, 44 photographers from 24 countries have been nominated in various categories, including sports, nature and portraits.

The winners will now be announced online on April 16. The nominated photos can be seen in De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam from 18 April to 26 July. The exhibition can then be seen in several other countries.

“We are appalled that these events cannot go ahead,” said the organization in a press release. “We were well on our way with planning and it is not easy to make such a decision.”

The organization says it will not be able to move the event to a later date, as it is not known how the situation regarding the coronavirus will develop.

The coronavirus in short

  • The virus spreads mainly through cough and sneeze drops that hang in the air for a short time. Those who do not show any symptoms hardly pose a risk of infection.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. This number can decrease with good precautions.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) symptoms.
  • Almost all deaths concern older or already sick people. You can protect these people with precautionary measures.
