After a little more than 80 days at the helm of La Selecta, the now former blue and white coach, Rubén de la Barrera, who stopped directing the national team in December of last year, will face a lawsuit from the Salvadoran Football Federation. Soccer (FESFUT), since he did not comply with the entire termination clause of the contract when leaving the Cuscatleco team, to become a helmsman in Portuguese soccer.

In an interview with the local media La Cancha, the president of the Regularization Commission of the federation, Humberto Sáenz Marinero, revealed that the former Spanish coach did not fully cancel the termination clause to leave the team, and become the new Strategist for Vizela, in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

The Spaniard is part of the list of technicians who had an express step as the management of the major soccer team of El Salvador, when his administration began on September 25, 2023, and ended on December 18 of the same year, after It was known that he would take over as head coach in the Portuguese league, a decision that was widely criticized not only by the fans, but also by the sports press, which classified the actions as a “lack of commitment” on the part of the strategist.

According to Sáenz Marinero, the federation filed a lawsuit with FIFA because the coach only paid a part of the termination clause, and there is a certain percentage that is still pending to cut legal ties, therefore the notification was submitted to the courts of the International Federation so that it is the means that resolves.

The Spanish coach arrived in El Salvador in one of the most complicated stages that La Selecta has had in recent years, with the departure of Hugo Pérez, after the match against Trinidad and Tobago at the Jorge el Mágico González national stadium, on December 10. September, where the team fell 2-3 against the islanders, and equaled the negative streak of “Primi” Maradiaga with more than 13 games without a victory.

22 games without victory

La Selecta closed March with 666 days without winning a match, despite the three friendly matches it had during the FIFA match against Bonaire (1-1), the match in which it was considered that the team could have the first victory since 2022 ; However, this was not the case, against Argentina (3-0), and against Honduras (1-1).

It must be remembered that the blue and white won for the last time on June 4, 2022, with 3 to 1 against Granada, in the CONCACAF Nations League.

El Salvador will begin its journey in the qualifiers towards the 2026 World Cup on Thursday, June 6 against Puerto Rico at the Cuscatlán stadium and on Sunday the 9th of the same month before visiting Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
